Player Spotlight – StarlingV

First name: Janis

Screen name: StarlingV

Tell us a little bit about yourself :

I’m 50, married, with one son who just graduated from college. I work as a college librarian and I love cats, fashion, music, and especially playing games. I also really love to read, and the best part of my job is being allowed to choose the books for our library.  Apart from academic books to support our students’ and faculty’s work, I also make sure that there are lots of interesting choices for leisure reading.

At home, I like to relax with crosswords, knitting, social media and of course Pogo. The variety of games and the great people who are part of the Pogo community make it a continual favorite.  Sometimes my husband and I play against each other in Cribbage, Scrabble, Jungle Gin or Dice Derby.  Other times I like to work on my ranking in various one-player games.   Being a Club Pogo member means I’m never bored.

State, Province or Country?  New York

Astrological sign?  Scorpio

What do you usually play on Pogo.com? Thousand Island Solitaire, although a new favorite for me is Mahjong Escape

What did you have for breakfast this morning? I skipped it this morning, but had a delicious roast beef sandwich for lunch.

Do you have a life philosophy? I share mine with a favorite author, Lewis Carroll: The opinion of other people in general is useless in determining whether a thing is right or wrong.

What is your favorite Pogo.com game? Thousand Island Solitaire — I’m excited to achieve rank 50; it won’t be long now!

What’s your favorite TV show? Game of Thrones

What’s your favorite drink? Ginger ale

What’s your favorite season? Autumn

Apart from Pogo, what are your hobbies? Knitting, reading, playing with my two Siamese kitties.

What’s the last good book you read? The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.  He’s the author of Cloud Atlas and his books just keep getting better.

Who’s your hero or heroine and why? TV’s Mister Rogers, because he always encouraged children (and grown-ups!) to be kind, creative, and to never stop learning and growing.

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you do? Stow away on a flight to London or Rome.  I guess getting home might be an issue, though — I’m sure I wouldn’t want to come back the same day!

If you could gently remove any celebrity from the spotlight, who would it be? Toss up between Dr. Oz and Dr. Phil.

Do you have a clean joke you can share with us? PATIENT: I can’t sleep at night, doctor. I keep dreaming that I’m a teepee and a wigwam. DOCTOR: I know your trouble — you’re two tents.

How long have you been playing Pogo? 14 years

What makes you a unique Pogo fan? I’m not sure, but it might just be my Mini — I enjoy styling my Pogo-self in wild and fantastical ways, even though my own style is pretty tame.

I can usually be found on Pogo.com playing: In the UK chat rooms, because I’m such a big anglophile.

Coffee, tea, or soda? Soda, please.

Sugary treats or salty treats? I love both — but usually when I have a craving, it’s for sweets.

Cat, dog or small rodent? Cats!  Although I’ve enjoyed having pet gerbils in the past, so small rodents are also cool.

If you could remove any emotion from mankind, which one would you choose? Anxiety — if we could all be more mellow, we might have easier lives and less conflict.

  • What an interesting profile, Janis. This was the first time I’d seen ‘anxiety’ as the emotion one desires to remove. I believe you’re right – it does seem to spur conflict. I do hope to see you in TIsolitaire. As well, I hope you get to England (again?) soon!
